Project Title: AI for Student Learning & Research - A Co-created Student Resource

The project is: In Progress

Project Summary:

Responding to the call for a pro-innovation approach to AI in HE, students and staff at QMUL co-created an AI Moodle resource for medical and dental students. Released in October 2023, it promotes constructive and ethical use of generative AI in learning and research; integrating AI tools in engaging formats and interactive activities, enhancing AI literacy for information retrieval, critical thinking, writing, revision, and clinical scenario creation.

By February 2024, over 10,000 students were enrolled, 4544 had accessed the resource and 384 had completed the core elements. Students reported 78-84% satisfaction rate across all domains, with feedback highlighting the benefits: “I found it very interesting learning about the different ways [AI] can be used … but at the same time recognising its limitations and what we need to look out for.” Staff view the module as a "much-needed" resource “that empowers our students to harness the potential of AI while emphasising ethical usage."  Recognising the project's innovation and scalability, we received a £10,000 grant from the President and Principal’s Fund for Educational Excellence. Starting as a non-compulsory resource, it is now integrated into the Year 1MBBS and BDS curricula and is being adapted by the School of Business and Management.

Impact: To support AI literacy and promote the constructive and ethical use of generative AI in learning and research for students.

Audience: Initially piloted for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, there are plans to scale up the project across the University.

This output is part of a member project - AI Garage: Creating the Future Now which collects and curates cutting-edge practice examples of AI. You can explore other submissions here.
