As the Lead Consultant EDI at Advance HE, Clare works with colleagues to support HE institutions to address inequality and create inclusive culture. With a career spanning central and local government, the voluntary sector, broadcasting, the police service and higher education, Clare has more than 35 years’ experience supporting organisations on their equality, diversity and inclusion journeys.
Previously Clare worked with the Equality Challenge Unit where she led work on religion and belief and sexual orientation in HE, before setting up and leading the training and learning team. As the Diversity Director at Greater Manchester Police she introduced the Force’s first Integrated Equality Scheme, developed an innovative suite of services to build equality and diversity skills and confidence amongst police officers, and was instrumental in developing the National Equality Standard for the Police Service to enables forces to effectively evaluate their progress on equality and diversity.
Clare has substantial experience of developing and delivering training and consultancy related to equality, diversity and inclusion. Her work for HE clients has included:
- Race equity, incorporating an understanding of how racism and racial privilege affect students and staff; the nature and impact of micro-aggressions/affirmations, and how to embed anti-racism and build conscious inclusivity.
- Understanding and dismantling barriers to inclusion – conscious and unconscious bias, privilege and disadvantage, structural, cultural and behavioural obstacles.
- Dignity and respect including managing good relations on campus,
Clare brings her personal experience of exploring both privilege and marginalisation to her professional practice, and is committed to developing and supporting others to become effective change agents.
