Dan joined Advance HE in January 2020 and has been in the post of Governance Development Manager since October 2021. Dan works on developing our approach to supporting Advance HE’s member needs across our governance portfolio of work, which has included leading sector-level work on academic assurance and student experience; approaches to board diversity and building belonging and improving governor recruitment. He has also undertaken governance effectiveness reviews leading projects with multiple-sized institutions including work with further and higher education providers and leads work with students’ unions. Prior to this, he worked with supporting leaders in college HE, independent providers and specialist institutions with teaching and learning strategies, improving effective governance and equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives. Dan’spririty interest is in how higher education governance enables institutions to assure a high-quality experience for students and delivers positive outcomes at an organisational level and for wider stakeholders.
Dan has undertaken governance effectiveness review work with Hartpury University and College, Southampton Solent University and the University of Cumbria. He has also undertaken academic governance effectiveness reviews at the University of Surrey and Keele University. This has given him a wealth of experience in undertaking reviews and understanding multiple regulatory requirements. He also led governance effectiveness reviews with the University of Essex Students’ Union and Warwick University Students’ Union giving him vast experience in working with student trustees and an understanding of Charity Law and good governance within the charity sector.
Dan has a keen interest in student engagement and the role of student voice and partnerships across the governance of institutions. Before joining Advance, HE Dan worked in multiple student-facing roles in varying student unions. Outside of Advance HE Dan is an External Trustee at a small and specialist Students’ Union, where he is Vice Chair working alongside the Student President as Chair of the Board, a role he has held since 2018.
