We know that institutions need to drive diversity and inclusion in all that they do. Governance has a critical role to play in this. Both by modelling diversity and inclusion in the make-up and function of the board, but also through enabling and challenging their institutions to make progress with and for their staff and students.
This project will help those engaging to:
- Understand the state of play and the need for urgent action to diversify boards
- Learn and explore how boards can effectively challenge progress on EDI for staff and students
- Create personal accountability for action.
The project is an Advance HE member benefit and is open to colleagues at Advance HE member institutions. Information on Advance HE membership can be found via the link below.
Diversity of HE Governing Bodies in the UK Report
Using the data collected by HESA/Jisc on the composition of governing bodies in the UK higher education sector, this report will provide analysis and insight into the diversity of governing bodies in the sector. It will put a spotlight on the current diversity of boards, and provide the data to bring to light areas of underrepresentation. This will be an important milestone for the sector to understand the data behind board diversity, in order to put in place measures and develop a culture to increase board diversity.

2020's digital conference provided a forum to share practice and discuss the key governance issues arising as we face the first full academic year of higher education delivery during a global pandemic which has already created significant change in the way providers operate. Another key focus of the conference focused on how governance enables institutions to move forward embedding inclusivity in all that they do, in order to be truly fit for the future. #GovConf20
