Part of Advance HE's 2023-24 member project 'Creating a culture for Strategic EDI Change', this rapid literature review looked at practices outside of institutional structures which support students from underrepresented groups following their entry into UK higher education.
In a UK study on the topic, 'Pathways for potential: how universities, regulators and Government can tackle educational inequality’ (Russell Group, 2020), the document sought to bring together the best practices of UK Russell Group universities that address inequality within higher education. However, out of the 24 short case studies featured in the document, only two consider widening participation beyond the recruitment stage.
To fill this gap, 'Open doors, narrow corridors?' focuses in on practice from a host of institutions internationally, drawing on peer-reviewed and grey literature to highlight some key examples, in areas such as community and civic engagement, support for family and caring responsibilities and extracurricular engagement, volunteering and paid work.
While there are gaps in the literature, it is important to acknowledge that there is successful practice happening across the globe and we hope to highlight
this here.
