Over 650 delegates focused on innovation, inclusion and impact while exploring the future of higher education over the three days of Advance HE’s Teaching and Learning Conference 2024, held at the Nottingham Trent University City Campus.
Practitioners involved in all aspects of HE teaching and learning from the UK and overseas grabbed the opportunity to hear about future-focused education from keynote speakers including Professor Sarah Jones, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Education Innovation, Solent University and Professor Phil Newton, Swansea University, alongside a mix of panel sessions, more than 200 presentations, over 40 workshops, and nearly 20 roundtables, as well as networking with peers.
Prof Phil Newton, fantastic keynote - if you make it easy for people to cheat (take short cuts) many will. Audience Waiting in suspense for the solutions for AI… very entertaining and engaging speaker. @AdvanceHE @JackieNjoroge9 @SalfordUniLTEC pic.twitter.com/Ruvch4GXAt

Another brilliant idea I am taking home from @AdvanceHE #TLConf24 for co-creation with students: Introducing synoptic assessments as a concept to first year biomedical science students using a Cake analogy and design thinking model 💡 pic.twitter.com/9PZooV2wqZ

Poster sessions
More than 40 poster sessions were exhibited over the course of the three day conference.
I've been working for the Association for Peer Learning and Support over the past couple of years with a team of around 15 to 20 colleagues. We have been working on a sector mapping project for Advance HE which we’re due to publish in the next couple of weeks.
“Our poster summarises the journey that we’ve been on. We've looked across 69 individual schemes and 53 institutions. We did a systematic literature review of everything that came out in the last 10 years and then a survey and case studies with really up-to-date good practice across the sector.
“We've got lots of different findings and recommendations for what we see as the future development of peer learning and support across the sector.”
Dave Lochtie
Our poster is about the work that we've done looking at the equity basis for who gets Advance HE fellowships within our institution.
"We do a lot of work on our student outcomes data comparing outcomes for different student populations. When we went through our Advance HE accreditation for PSF 2023, we wanted to include the same kind of outlook for our staff data for recognition so we can check for different departments, different staff contracts and different protected characteristics.”Dr Sarah Flynn
Focus on teaching in Thailand
Twenty-seven members of staff from Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand joined conference delegates as part of a trip to exchange approaches on contemporary teaching.
Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) is a comprehensive, research-intensive university based in central Bangkok that has put a strong focus on the quality of its teaching. In collaboration with Advance HE, it has now recognised over 400 of its staff as Advance HE Fellows and recently achieved a 5* ranking by QS for Academic Development.
Professor Pansiri Phansuwan, Vice President of Academic Affairs at SWU was awarded Principal Fellowship in reflection of her strategic leadership of teaching and learning at the University and across Thailand, including her leadership of the Thailand Professional and Organisational Development Network.
The contingent will also visit the University of Loughborough and University of Nottingham during their trip. SWU has a longstanding partnership with the University of Nottingham on programmes relating to healthcare.
