Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming a hot topic within education, and universities and colleges are at the forefront of this debate. As generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, become more sophisticated, institutions must ensure they have policies and procedures to guide the fair use of AI, and governing bodies must be aware of the opportunities and risks associated with this ever-evolving technology.

Event aims
This interactive online event allowed attendees to learn more about how AI impacts higher education by sharing insights and questions with others involved in governance. The session gave board members and others interested in governance a better understanding of the main issues around AI in higher education, including seeking assurance around academic provision and practice.
Advance HE has been running a series of events engaging different stakeholders within institutions in scenario-based discussions about the impact of AI across many areas, including teaching, assessment, accessibility and widening participation. This session looked at the lessons and feedback from previous sessions to help governors, governance professionals and senior leaders see and discuss the challenges and effective practices in predicting and responding to AI in education.

This virtual event was 90 minutes long and follow a format that included both input from experts and provides an opportunity for colleagues to share concerns and learn from each other. It helped colleagues understand the latest developments in AI practice and identify and manage related risks at a strategic level.
The format of the event as follows:
- 5-minute introduction to the session, speakers and topic.
- 15-minute presentation of the outputs from the previous AI sessions with other participant groups in higher education. This presentation will set out the provocation for the group discussions.
- 10-minute Q&A with the presenters
- 30-minute breakout discussions about the topics introduced in the presentation.
- 20-minute plenary for groups to share their main points of discussion with the wider audience.
